BMW has not released a true halo sports car, close to a supercar, in decades, with the M1 from the 1970s being a notable example. While the BMW i8 hybrid from a few years ago might be seen as an attempt, it lacked the performance to be considered a true halo model, even though its design was striking. However, the German automaker may be preparing something special, inspired by its recent successful limited-edition sports cars.
In a recent interview with AutoExpress, Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President for BMW M customers, brand, and sales, revealed that BMW is eager to develop new “dream cars,” including a halo sports car similar to the iconic M1. Neubauer discussed the upcoming limited-edition BMW Skytop convertible, set to be unveiled at the Villa d’Este event in Italy next month. She explained that halo models create a strong positive impact on both the brand and its product lineup. These cars excite dedicated customers and attract admiration from even those who cannot afford them. “This will be part of our future road map as well,” Neubauer said.
BMW is also focused on competing with Porsche, though Neubauer acknowledged the challenge. When asked about rivaling the Porsche 911, she hinted at BMW’s interest, but emphasized the brand loyalty Porsche customers have. “If we do it, we need to get it absolutely right,” she said.
Spy photos have already emerged of a potential new model that could fit the halo car vision. The images suggest a coupe inspired by the Neue Klasse platform, which could support both gas and electric models. The proportions of the car are reminiscent of the M1, further fueling speculation that this could be BMW’s future halo sports car.
