The muscular Mercedes-AMG GT coupe entered its second generation for the 2024 model year. However, the four-door AMG GT continued with only minor updates, including a slightly redesigned front end and a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Now, Mercedes is preparing to replace the gas-powered AMG GT four-door with an all-electric model. The company recently teased the new AMG-exclusive EV on Instagram, revealing a shadowy image that highlights its aerodynamic shape ahead of a full reveal in June.
Although the teaser image is dark, a few details are clear. A visible cut line in the wide rear haunches confirms that the electric model will have four doors. The current AMG GT four-door features a liftback design, with a sloping roofline and a rear hatch. Mercedes appears to be continuing with this approach rather than adopting a traditional sedan profile.
Mercedes first previewed this electric car with the Vision AMG concept in 2022. While many dramatic design elements from the concept, such as the translucent side windows, are unlikely to reach production, some signature features are expected to carry over. Mercedes has been increasingly using its three-pointed-star logo in headlight and taillight designs. The new AMG EV could showcase the boldest version of this design yet. The concept’s three-piece taillights, which glowed like a fighter jet’s afterburners, also seem to be making their way to production, as seen in spy photos of camouflaged prototypes.
The electric AMG sedan will be built on a dedicated platform called AMG.EA. This platform will feature a high-voltage battery designed for rapid charging. It will also use new axial-flux motors, developed by British company Yasa, which Mercedes acquired in 2021. These motors promise an ideal combination of power density, compact size, and light weight.
Following the launch of the four-door fastback, Mercedes plans to introduce an electric AMG SUV built on the same platform.
The Mercedes-AMG electric sedan is expected to arrive for the 2026 model year. It may be sold alongside the current gas-powered GT four-door for a few years, especially since the GT63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid only debuted in 2024. The electric AMG SUV should follow shortly after.
