Nio’s more affordable sub-brand, Onvo, has unveiled its second model, the Onvo L90, at the Shanghai Motor Show. The large all-electric SUV could provide a budget-friendly alternative to models like the Volvo EX90 or Kia EV9.
Positioned above the L60, which competes with the Tesla Model Y, the Onvo L90 is built on Nio’s NT3.0 platform. This means it will feature the latest technology from the Chinese premium brand when deliveries start in China during the third quarter of this year.
The L90 stands out with its boxier, more upright design, in contrast to the sportier L60. It includes Nio’s signature shark-nose grille and split headlamps, with the upper lights wrapping around the front edge of the bonnet. Under the bonnet, there’s a large frunk that offers up to 240 liters of storage. Unique design features include frameless doors and hidden B- and C-pillars, which add a premium feel.
With a length of 5145mm, width of 1998mm, and height of 1786mm, the L90 is 130mm longer, 18mm wider, and 6mm taller than the Kia EV9. Its long 3110mm wheelbase contributes to its spacious design.
Both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions will be available. The single-motor RWD model will feature a rear-mounted 340kW motor, while the AWD variants will deliver 440kW. The L90’s advanced suspension system includes double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, with air springs to enhance ride comfort.
Equipped with a 900V electrical system, the L90 can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 18 minutes. It will also offer Nio’s 144-second battery swap capability, available in China and select locations in Europe.
The Onvo L90 is expected to launch in China in the third quarter of 2025. A third model, the L80, will follow later this year.
Nio’s expansion into the Australian market is tied to the introduction of the Onvo brand in the UK, though it’s unclear whether the brand will arrive this year. To facilitate this, Nio has already filed trademarks with IP Australia. The company is likely to launch the Onvo L60 first, which is expected to offer up to 1000km of range and a fast 0-80 percent charge time of around 15 minutes, potentially undercutting the Tesla Model Y.
