Nissan unveiled its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) and its first electrified pickup truck, the all-new Frontier Pro, at the Shanghai Auto Show. The model is developed through a joint venture between Nissan and Zhengzhou.
The Frontier Pro will launch in China later this year, with plans for a global release. This could include the Malaysian market, although availability there is not confirmed yet.
The Frontier Pro’s powertrain combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a high-output electric motor. Together, they generate 40PS and 800Nm of torque, offering an electric-only range of up to 135 km.
This truck is equipped with a 5-link rear suspension and Nissan’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, which optimizes torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. It also features an electromechanical rear differential lock for improved off-road performance. Drivers can choose between four drive modes: Hybrid, Pure Electric, Performance, and Snow.
The design of the Frontier Pro embraces the “Rugged Tech” concept, blending a strong, modern exterior with a refined and spacious interior. The front of the truck highlights an illuminated Nissan logo in white, symbolizing the brand’s shift toward electrified mobility.
Five LED light elements span across the hood, with the central three lights paying homage to the classic 1980s Nissan D21 pickup. The updated design uses advanced LED technology to reimagine the D21’s iconic three-slot hood.
The Frontier Pro comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels and 265/65R18 tires. Inside, the truck offers a premium experience, featuring a panoramic roof, a 10-inch LCD instrument panel, and a large 14.6-inch infotainment screen. The front seats are equipped with heating, ventilation, and seat-back massage functions for added comfort.
For those with active lifestyles, the Frontier Pro includes practical features like roof rails and an electronic retractable cargo cover. It also has a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) port that allows users to power household devices with up to 6kW of electricity from the truck’s hybrid battery.
Nissan has not yet released official pricing but is expected to provide more information when the vehicle is launched in China later this year.
