China’s Hybrid Pickup Delivers 620-Mile Range, Exceeds 25M Test Miles

by Grace

Geely’s new hybrid pickup, the Radar, is setting out to revolutionize the market with its cutting-edge technology and hybrid design. The vehicle offers a combined driving range of over 620 miles, catching attention for its innovative features and the shift towards hybrid technology in a segment traditionally dominated by gas-powered engines.

Radar integrates Geely’s Omni Stack energy platform and Shuttle IoT system, positioning it as a versatile tool for outdoor and off-road activities. These technologies are designed to enhance the pickup’s capabilities, making it adaptable to various driving conditions.

Built on Geely’s M.A.P. platform, the Radar introduces the company’s Thor EM hybrid system, which supports both electric and plug-in hybrid configurations. At the heart of this system is a unique 3-speed hybrid transmission (3DHT) built specifically for pickups. This transmission allows for smooth transitions between driving modes, improving efficiency and performance.

Geely has rigorously tested this system, earning China’s S-grade hybrid system reliability certification. The system has been validated through over 1,000 powertrain tests, 400,000 operational hours, and 24.85 million miles of endurance testing.

The Radar pickup comes with a front-mounted 1.5T engine paired with the 3DHT transmission, ensuring solid performance in diverse conditions, including off-road and high-altitude environments. The pickup can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.5 seconds, with the three-speed gearbox optimizing both performance and fuel efficiency, particularly at higher speeds.

Fuel Efficiency and Hybrid System Benefits

The hybrid system enhances the vehicle’s fuel efficiency, combining gasoline and electric power to improve energy use across different conditions. With a thermal efficiency of 44.26%, one of the highest in its class, the system reduces fuel consumption by 21% compared to traditional gasoline-powered pickups. This makes the Radar more efficient, with a longer driving range and improved operational cost savings.

The Omni Stack platform further boosts the pickup’s functionality, offering energy storage, supply, and output features. This allows the vehicle to serve as a mobile power source for remote or off-grid operations. Additionally, the Shuttle platform connects the pickup to drones and cloud-based systems, enabling real-time data management and remote operation.

Safety and Reliability

To ensure operational safety, the Radar comes equipped with a dual-motor redundancy system. This feature ensures that the vehicle can continue operating even if one of the motors fails. The hybrid system’s reliability has been tested under harsh conditions, including extreme speeds, high altitudes, and freezing temperatures.

Radar’s flexibility is another key advantage. The vehicle is available in different configurations tailored to meet the needs of industries like public security, infrastructure, and energy. These specialized variants use the hybrid system, mobile energy capabilities, and IoT features to support various professional applications, from emergency response to powering equipment at remote sites.

Geely’s Radar pickup aims to offer more than just a traditional vehicle; it’s designed to meet the demands of modern operations with a combination of advanced technology, efficiency, and reliability.
