Mercedes-Benz Unveils ‘Steer-By-Wire’ System, Following Lexus and Tesla

by Grace

JAKARTA – Mercedes-Benz has announced the introduction of its new ‘steer-by-wire’ technology, reinforcing its commitment to advanced mobility solutions.

This innovative system eliminates the traditional mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, the steering wheel is connected to the vehicle via an electric cable, known as “by-wire.” According to Markus Schafer, Chief Technology Officer of Development & Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Group, this system marks a significant leap forward in the evolution of mobility, enhancing the driving experience for customers.

“This technology, when paired with SAE Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, will offer a new level of entertainment and convenience for drivers,” Schafer stated on the brand’s official website on Wednesday, April 23.

Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that ‘steer-by-wire’ will offer improved maneuverability and make parking easier compared to conventional systems. Since the system requires less physical effort from the driver, there’s no need to manually grip the steering wheel, especially during parking.

The German automaker confirmed that the ‘steer-by-wire’ system will be featured in several mass-production models starting in 2026.

Mercedes-Benz follows other leading carmakers such as Tesla, which integrated this technology into its Cybertruck model launched in late 2023. Lexus has also adopted the technology in its RZ model, which boasts a wider steering ratio of up to 200 degrees. Honda has joined the trend as well, preparing to incorporate ‘steer-by-wire’ in its upcoming Series 0 model.

While the technology has yet to be tested extensively in various road conditions, it holds promise as a key feature for future vehicles.
