BMW iDrive Panoramic to Introduce HypersonX Soundscape Feature

by Grace

BMW‘s new panoramic iDrive system, set to launch in the “Neue Klasse” models at the end of 2025, will feature an innovative HypersonX soundscape. Developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio, this system includes 43 unique sound signals and special driving sounds designed for both Personal and Sport Modes. The system adapts to the driving situation, creating an emotional bond between the driver and the vehicle through its dynamic sound experience.

This new audio experience is made possible by technological advancements in both hardware and software introduced with the Neue Klasse. The BMW Operating System X, along with a newly developed control unit, forms the foundation for the sound architecture, enhancing the overall driving experience in terms of vehicle character, driving performance, and functionality.

The HypersonX sound spectrum plays a significant role in giving the Neue Klasse models a distinct auditory identity. Focused on precision, warmth, and lightness, the sound design creates an emotional connection between the driver and their car. The system draws inspiration from natural tones and artistic structures, offering a sound experience that is more refined and dimensional than previous BMW systems.

One key component behind this advanced audio experience is the new audio control unit, which expands the dynamic range of the sounds. The spatial modulation of the sound allows occupants to feel immersed in the HypersonX soundscape. For instance, during acceleration, the car creates a multi-layered sound experience that authentically conveys speed and driving dynamics.

The sound design also emphasizes a human touch, with a particular focus on the middle and lower frequencies to create a balanced, welcoming atmosphere. This, combined with intuitive controls, light effects, and cozy interior design, ensures a pleasant and comfortable environment for the driver and passengers.

In a unique touch, BMW Group Design Studio employees contributed to the “welcome sound” by recording their voices in their native languages. These recordings add an empathetic and personal feel to the driving experience. These voices, carefully incorporated into the sound design, enhance the sense of warmth and human connection.

The HypersonX soundscape uses over nine million sound instances, generated using a new algorithm based on BMW’s sound DNA. These elements are then refined to create a cohesive, multi-dimensional acoustic experience, ensuring that the soundscape evokes an emotional connection with the driver, creating a positive and inviting atmosphere in every driving situation.
