BYD Tops China’s EV Market in Weekly Registrations as Nio Soars 94%

China registered a total of 351,000 passenger vehicles in the week ending April 13, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous week, according to CarNewsChina. Among these, 186,000 were new energy vehicles, pushing the electric vehicle penetration rate to 53%, up by 2.9 percentage points.

BYD led the market with 53,400 vehicle registrations, a rise of 18.4% compared to 45,100 the week before. In the first two weeks of April, BYD registered a total of 98,500 vehicles in China. The company, which sold 4.3 million vehicles in 2024, is aiming for 5.5 million deliveries this year. Its premium brand Denza registered 3,000 vehicles, marking a 15.4% increase from the previous week.

Tesla registered 5,400 vehicles during the week, reflecting a 50% increase from 3,600. In March, Tesla China delivered 78,828 vehicles, a decrease of 11.5% year-on-year but more than double its February deliveries.

Li Auto saw 7,200 registrations, up 16.1% from 6,200. Year-to-date April registrations reached 13,400 units. Despite selling over 500,000 vehicles in 2024, Li Auto has delayed the release of its next all-electric model following poor reception of its Li Mega minivan. The company is targeting 700,000 deliveries in 2025.

Xpeng registered 6,700 vehicles, down 10.7% from the previous week. In March, the company delivered 33,205 vehicles, maintaining a monthly delivery rate of over 30,000 units for five consecutive months, supported by its Mona M03 sedan, which reached 100,000 cumulative units in less than eight months.

Xiaomi recorded 6,300 vehicle registrations, an increase of 23.5% from the previous week. In the first half of April, Xiaomi delivered 11,400 units and has raised its 2025 target from 300,000 to 350,000 vehicles. The company sold 135,000 units in 2024.

Leapmotor registered 6,400 vehicles, a rise of 18.5%, bringing its month-to-date total to 11,800 units.

Deepal reported 4,340 registrations, a 5.9% increase, with a total of 8,440 units in the first two weeks of April.

Nio experienced a significant weekly jump, registering 3,500 units, up 94.4% from 1,800 the previous week. The company introduced various incentives, including five years of free battery swaps. Nio Group, which includes Onvo and Firefly, registered 4,200 units, an increase of 68% from the prior week. Onvo recorded 730 units, while Firefly is set to launch its first model on April 19. Nio is targeting 440,000 deliveries in 2024, with half of that coming from Onvo.

Aito registered 3,200 vehicles, a 33.3% decrease from the previous week. Zeekr reported 2,300 registrations, a decline of 14.8%. Avatr registered 1,500 units, a 15.4% increase.

Despite concerns from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers about market disruption, CarNewsChina continues to release weekly EV registration data.
