Indonesia’s car sales have shown a modest improvement of 2.2% year-on-year, with 72,295 units sold in February 2025, according to The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO).
A Long-Awaited Recovery
After over a year of slow performance, Indonesia’s car sales have finally seen a slight recovery. The year 2024, however, was not one of the country’s strongest in terms of sales.
Reuters reports that the growth was largely driven by electric vehicle (EV) sales, with Chinese EV manufacturers playing a key role in making affordable options more accessible to Indonesian consumers. GAIKINDO Chairman Jongkie D. Sugiarto also credits the rise in sales to the improving state of Indonesia’s economy.
Electric Vehicle Sales on the Rise
BYD, a Chinese EV maker, entered the Indonesian market in June 2024 and quickly became a leader in EV sales. Since November 2024, BYD has accounted for a third of the country’s EV market share. Chery Automobile, another Chinese brand, follows closely behind in the EV segment.
Dominance of Japanese Automakers
Despite the rise in EV sales, Japanese automakers continue to dominate the Indonesian car market. In February 2025, they accounted for nearly 86% of total sales, with 62,123 units sold.
Toyota led the pack with 24,397 units sold, showing a 10% increase from the previous month and a 4.4% rise year-on-year. Daihatsu followed with 11,959 units sold, though its year-on-year sales fell by 20.7%. However, Daihatsu saw a strong 19.8% increase from the previous month.
Mitsubishi’s sales also saw an 11.5% increase year-on-year, with 6,684 units sold. However, other Japanese brands faced declines, especially Isuzu, which saw a 15.2% drop in sales, with only 1,903 units sold in February. Suzuki and Mitsubishi Fuso also experienced declines of 4.9% and 6.5%, respectively, with Suzuki selling 4,750 units and Mitsubishi Fuso selling 2,106 units.
GAIKINDO’s 2025 Sales Forecast
Looking ahead, GAIKINDO expects total vehicle sales for 2025 to reach 900,000 units. This projection comes after a disappointing 2024, where total sales reached 865,723 units.
