EU and China Begin Discussions on Removing EU Tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles

by Grace

The European Union and China have started talks on removing EU tariffs on Chinese electric cars, according to a report by the German newspaper Handelsblatt on Thursday.

The negotiations began after EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic met with China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Beijing at the end of March. Both parties agreed to address the issue of EU tariffs through dialogue, Handelsblatt reported.

Last year, the European Union introduced tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) made in China. The EU justified the tariffs by claiming they were necessary to counteract unfair practices, including cheap loans, land, raw materials, and other subsidies. The EU emphasized that the aim was to create a level playing field, rather than excluding Chinese car manufacturers.

The European Commission has expressed its willingness to continue discussions with China to find an alternative to the tariffs.
